Oakland Community Theater's upcoming melodrama The Code of the West operates on the Crosby Still Nash and Young lyrics "You who are on the road….must have a Code…. That you can live by". Upcoming performances are on June 29, 30 and July 6,7 at 7 pm, and Sunday matinees on July 1 & 8 at 2pm at Washington School Gym, 637 Locust Street, in Oakland, OR, for the reasonable price of $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and children 18 and under. The play promises to keep you

gracefully glide from appealing to our sense of humor, to surprise about their actual moral compass in their dealings with each other. There's the saloon owner and dancehall vixen, Flossie Mae, who is one minute charming and then alternately manipulative for her own gains. Of even greater evil is Amanda Wrightworthy, the plotting villainess who plans to use her knowledge of the town's REAL value to buy up properties that are presently worthless but may soon become valuable. She also wants to undo the present governings of the town of Oakton, by doing away with its mayor, through the use of her two henchmen, the Faultins'.

guessing the outcome until the very end.  It is the story of a collision of characters whose only common bond is their belief that some social rules are to be defended at all costs, The Code of the West.

From its onset, we see an "honor among thieves" shown by gunslingers Jesse and Fluke Faultin. These characters may not always have honesty as their guide, but they take offense from anyone who does not follow the Code, especially the naïve Sheriff. All of the characters seem to

Enter into this dilemma the miner on a lucky streak, One-eyed Ernestine. Having just struck "the big one", her money seems suspiciously to be the same amount as has been misplaced by Miss Wrightworthy, casting doubt on the honesty of this hardpan gold digger. Weighing in on all this dastardly and suspicious business is the Sheriff, a man who is at once full of integrity and above reproach, but also seems a few bricks full of a load about the West's social graces. He seems as likely to offend nearly everyone as he is to help keep the peace, with his inability to grasp the need of following the Code of the West.

This latest offering from the Oakland Community Theater follows a great tradition of performances which began in 2002 with Rustlers of Red Rock, followed by the wildly successful sequel, Rustlers' Revenge in 2003.  The Scoundrel of Dagger Gulch was performed in 2006. Updates this year in the acoustics of the Washington School Gym through the use of microphones promises to help overcome past difficulties with being able to hear all the actors. Veteran actor Steve Marek directs this fine cast, which is a mix of veterans and newcomers to theater.

So if you are looking for an entertainment bargain, why not come out and enjoy a rollicking good time at  The Code of the West.
